A. Abolition of slavery in British Empire. After a 20-year parliamentary
campaign led by William Wilberforce, the Slave Trade Act is passed abolishing
slavery in the British Empire.
B. TV. Regular television broadcasts begin in NZ, starting in Auckland.
C. Women vote. New Zealand becomes the first self-governing nation in the
world where women have the right to vote. This law change is passed, despite the
opposition of Premier Richard Seddon and several of his ministers.
D. First satellite. The Soviet Space Program launches the world's
first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1.
E. Treaty of Waitangi. The Treaty of Waitangi is signed by 43 chiefs at
Waitangi on February 6th of this year. Signature gathering continues around NZ
for the next eight months.
F. First modern Olympics. The first Olympic games of the modern era take
place in Athens, Greece.
G. West Coast explorers. Thomas Brunner, Charles Heaphy & William Fox
begin their exploration of the West Coast of the South Island.
H. The Great Depression. The Great Depression begins in North America and
Europe. It will last for a decade with devastating effects around the world,
especially for developing countries.
I. Napoleon defeated at Waterloo. Napoleon is defeated at Waterloo. He is
fighting combined forces from the United Kingdom, Prussia and the Russian
Empire, commanded by the UK's Duke of Wellington, and Prussia's Gebhard von
Blücher.
J. Hawke's Bay earthquake A major earthquake kills 255 people and
destroys much of Napier, Hastings and rural Hawke's Bay.
